Landscape Industries Award: First Runner-Up
Category: Residential under $30,000
The brief from the client was to create a lushly planted garden with no grass but that included elements of architectural interest. There were some established trees to be retained which formed the framework for the garden and the result needed to view well from all angles including the street. Particular attention was given to working with heritage authorities due to its location.
The slate roofed lych gate entrance leads up a bluestone slab path to a central square. Here there is cross axis leading to a garden bench on one side and a sculptural urn on the other. The paved path is edged with granite cobbles and continues up to an archway, in the same style as the entrance, before finishing at the house. The overall feeling is of fertility and peace with the solidness of the stone giving a timeless sense of permanence and security.
